Our
last BWTA event at Dinas! We should have been sad, but when the
sun shines on such a lovely setting, it's difficult to keep the smile
off your face. Everyone was determined to have a memorable day -
even Iris, who had to withdraw with a broken foot came along to join the
party!

And
so the scene was set: good food, perfect weather, good company,
some nostalgia, entertaining tennis (perfect organisation?). The
round robin boxes were close - lots of close matches, so the
knock-out places were in doubt most of the way through.
However, when the last eight was finalised, it was the experienced
pairs who won through and our last Dinas title went to Penny
Marchant & Dawn Gumbley from Bewdley, who will go through to
the Masters in November. |
Our
raffle, thanks to Pat Coope getting everyone who set foot on the
premises to buy at least one ticket, raised a magnificent £144 for
Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Dinas
Powys Club has been the most welcoming of Clubs - and my thanks go to
the Club and especially to Margaret Rees, who does all the local
organisation. Thank you to Shirley Clunie for starting the event
here; to all the players who have made the journey through the lanes;
and special thanks to my assistants, Anthea and Pat.

A
referee couldn’t have asked for better conditions than I was fortunate
to have at Lymm LTC on this day in early September. Blue skies, a
welcoming host club, all my players arriving on time and the grass
courts playable by the afternoon made for a fittingly successful, albeit
sad final event run here by BWTA.
We
had twelve pairs from a wide area of the country who made up two groups
which were well contested and played in great spirit by all (some were
more buoyed up with spirit after a few bottles of wine at lunch than
others!) Lunch was taken outside in the sunshine and almost everyone stayed
to watch the finals rounds providing a good atmosphere right through the
day.
My
thanks to Julia Dixon of Lymm LTC who has been a fantastic help all
these years the tournament has run at this venue and to the 24 ladies
who played and contributed to a lovely day and £65 for MacMillan Cancer
Relief. Finally my thanks to Heather Staniforth who had everyone
laughing at her take off at the end of the final of Andre Agassi’s
farewell after his last match at the US Open last week and her
presentation of the prizes in ‘Duchess mode’
